Job Purpose

The Building and Property Manager maintains Eastside Church's facilities and manages relationships with our tenant organizations. This hands-on role ensures our building is safe, functional, and welcoming while supporting the church's mission of radical hospitality and community service. The position requires technical facility skills and the ability to work collaboratively across diverse communities.

This position reports to the Lead Pastor and is accountable to the Team Lead for Building & Grounds and the Eastside Church Leadership Council.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

Facility Maintenance and Operations Perform routine building inspections and preventive maintenance. Execute minor repairs including but not limited to: door hardware, lock programming, basic plumbing, electrical and HVAC troubleshooting, painting, and carpentry. Coordinate and supervise contractors for major repairs and specialized maintenance. Maintain building systems and ensure compliance with safety codes. Manage inventory of maintenance supplies and equipment. Respond to facility emergencies.

Tenant Relations and Coordination Serve as the primary point of contact for all tenant organizations. Address tenant maintenance requests and facility concerns in a timely and hospitable manner. Conduct regular check-ins with tenants. Facilitate communication between tenants regarding building policies, schedules, and maintenance. Support tenant needs in alignment with their missions and the church's values. Ensure Lead Pastor and Team Lead for Building & Grounds are kept abreast of general status month to month and are aware of any issues in a timely fashion to help best resolve.

Community and Missional Use Coordination Coordinate building use for congregational worship, programs, and community events. Prepare facilities for Sunday worship and church activities. Support ministry to homeless neighbors and community members. Collaborate with church staff and volunteers on facility-related matters. Supervise building volunteers for work days and maintenance projects.

Required Qualifications

Education: High school diploma or equivalent

Experience: Minimum 3 years of hands-on building maintenance, facilities management, or property management experience, preferably in multi-tenant or community-focused settings.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • General knowledge of building systems, basic plumbing, carpentry, electrical, HVAC, and general repair techniques.

  • Working knowledge of building codes, safety regulations, and ADA accessibility standards.

  • Demonstrated ability to perform minor repairs and installations independently.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with ability to build relationships across diverse communities.

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, work independently, and exercise sound judgment.

  • Basic computer skills for scheduling, communication, and record-keeping.

  • Commitment to or openness toward Eastside's progressive, inclusive values and mission.

  • Ability to supervise contractors and volunteers effectively.

  • Problem-solving skills and resourcefulness in addressing facility challenges.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in nonprofit, educational, or faith-based facility management.

  • Trade certifications or specialized training in HVAC, electrical, carpentry, plumbing, or general contracting.

  • Familiarity with progressive faith communities, social justice organizations, or LGBTQ+ inclusive spaces.

  • Experience with building security systems and programmable access control.

  • Bilingual abilities (Spanish/English)

  • Understanding of trauma-informed approaches when interacting with vulnerable populations.

Working Conditions

  • Part-time position: up to 20 hours per week at $20/hour.

  • Flexible schedule required, with some availability for occasional evenings or weekends for facility emergencies or special events.

  • Work performed primarily in an office/church building environment with multiple tenant organizations.

  • Physical requirements include climbing ladders, standing, kneeling, stooping, and lifting up to 50 pounds regularly.

  • Exposure to dust, cleaning chemicals, outdoor weather conditions during exterior maintenance.

  • Occasional work in confined spaces (mechanical rooms, crawl spaces) or at heights (ladders, lifts)

  • Must be able to respond to facility emergencies with reasonable timeliness
