East Atlanta Kids Club

East Atlanta Kids Club is a nonprofit, out-of-school -time tutoring, mentoring and enrichment program for under-resourced girls and boys ages 7 to 17.  Volunteer opportunities include mentoring, after-school kid's club, Saturday kid's club and annual events like the Brownwood Bike Rally and Easter Egg Hunt. Branan Towers

For over 40 years, Branan Towers has served as a beacon over the East Atlanta community. They serve seniors aged 62 years and above. Most of the residents live below the poverty level on less than $10,000 a year, with the vast majority surviving on the area minimum which is $8,820.  Volunteer opportunities include visiting residents, leading an activity, delivering food and annual events like the Summer Cook-out and Christmas Party.

Wellroot Family Services

Wellroot Family Services (formerly United Methodist Children's Home) serves over 245 children and adults a day in 40 counties across North Georgia, and it delivered over 56,000 days of care in 2017. They envision a world where every child is raised in a loving, compassionate, and nurturing home.  Volunteer opportunities include being a babysitter for foster families, becoming a foster or respite care family and collecting specific items needed for Eastside's Foster Family Closet.

Reconciling Ministries Network

Eastside Church is a member of Reconciling Ministries Network. We welcome, celebrate, and invite all to share in the life of our community through fellowship, worship, and leadership. As a Reconciling Congregation, we affirm that all people are of sacred worth and created in God’s image. We want all to know that you are loved by God and by your siblings in Christ here at Eastside Church. We are a diverse community and we embrace and value our diversity. We are all God’s children and Eastside welcomes and celebrates you, regardless of age, race, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, marital status, family structure, economic status, or physical or mental ability. All are welcomed, celebrated, affirmed, supported, and included here. Eastside Church values our differences and variety of perspectives and we believe that these differences make our community stronger. No matter who you are, where you have come from, how you got here, or where you are going, you are loved and we are excited you are here. La Gonave Haiti Partnership

The La Gonave Haiti Partnership is a “ministry of presence” and a community development partnership between the people of La Gonave, the Episcopal Diocese of Haiti and the United States Partners, of which we are one. We have made multiple trips to La Gonave and continue to foster a relationship with the small community of Ticolette.

CHRIS 180

Eastside works to ensure that we are supporting organizations in our community that are focused on access to care and support for all. CHRIS 180 is a behavioral health organization that is committed to addressing the social determinants of health to better help individuals, children and adults heal and be able to change directions and change their lives.

Racial Justice, Healing, and Reconciliation

Martha Brown UMC was founded in 1892. By 1918 the current sanctuary was built. Much of what Eastside knows of Martha Brown’s history can be found in this document. Archives of Martha Brown UMC are housed at the Pitts Theological Library at Candler. https://s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com/pittsarchives/mss028/pdf/MarthaBrown.pdf.

Eastside recognizes that the original building was likely built by extremely underpaid former slaves and decedents of former slaves. In our racial reconciliation advocacy work and donations we acknowledge the reparations needed to repair relationship across racial divides present in the history of the building and church we inherited.

From photographs and historic member records we can deduce that MBUMC was at its largest in the late 1950’s and was an exclusively white congregation. We begin to see decline in the congregation from a high membership of 2,000 members due to suburban flight. The church did seem to work to intentionally stay vibrant even with the white flight decline and invested in the building of Brannan Towers. The church welcomed their new, diverse neighbors at Branan towers with a weekly shared meal that lasted upwards of 30 years. When Martha Brown merged with Eastside in 2014, the weekly shared meal was their strongest ministry and offered opportunity for cross racial fellowship, which Eastside has remembered as we have intentionally invested in Racial Reconciliation in our community for the last 10 years.

Since 2016 Eastside’s iconic church steps have been decked with banners declaring Black Lives Matter // Do No Harm, Do Good // Love God // and You Are Loved. All 3 sets of banners have declared our intentionality in multi-racial community and worship opportunity.

It can be hard to know where to start in educating ourselves on becoming better allies and anti-racists. Here are some resources that may be helpful, and some organizations and businesses that we can support locally!
